Lead-Lag Relationship Between VIX and SPX Futures

The recent market correction has shown, once again, that the financial markets are strongly interconnected. The sell-off in stocks has led to a sharp increase in the credit spreads. The rally in oil price has helped commodity currencies such as the Canadian dollar and Australian dollar appreciate against the US dollar.

There exist, however, less obvious intermarket relationships, e.g. the one between the VIX futures and the SP500 futures. The VIX is a measure of implied volatility in the S&P 500 Index, and the VIX futures are contracts that trade on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) and give investors the right to buy or sell the VIX at a specific price on a future date.

Reference [1] examined the lead-lag relationship between VIX futures and SPX futures in the high-frequency domain. It pointed out,

The analysis reveals a large time variation in the lead-lag relation. Under low volatility, the lead-lag measures should be interpreted with caution as the two markets are not strongly connected. Under high volatility, returns exhibit a stronger negative correlation and a short-lived lead-lag with a tendency for VIX futures to lead SPX futures. The VIX futures leadership confirms the important role played by the VIX futures across the various SPX-related markets.

In short, when volatility is high VIX futures lead SPX futures. Moreover, the authors argued that the VIX futures lead over the SPX futures can be attributed mostly to hedging activities.

Moreover, we find that an increase in the proportion of cross-market trading is associated with a strengthened VIX futures lead. As VIX futures dealers can hedge their VIX futures position through delta-hedged SPX option positions, their hedging strategy would involve trading SPX futures after providing liquidity in the VIX futures market. Thereby, the hedging activities would contribute to the level of cross-market activity. Hence, it is possible that hedging activities are driving a part of the VIX futures lead over SPX futures. Another possibility is that the relation between cross-market trading and a stronger VIX futures lead appears due to a greater presence of high-frequency traders under high volatility.

Finally, the VIX futures lead is stronger when the market makers in the SPX options are in an aggregate negative gamma position.

Mortgages are not just for houses, though - they can also be used to purchase condos, townhouses, and even mobile homes.

Are mortgages only for houses?

If you are looking to purchase a property that is not a house, you will need to get a mortgage that is specific to non-residential properties. These mortgages usually have higher interest rates and shorter terms than mortgages for houses. It is important to speak with a lender about the options available to you if you are not interested in buying a house.

So, are mortgages only for houses? The answer is no - they can be used to purchase a variety of properties, including condos, townhouses, and mobile homes. Speak with a lender to learn more about the options available to you.

The different types of mortgages

There are a number of different types of mortgages available, so it is important to research the options before you decide which one is right for you. Days Sales Outstanding (DSO): Definition, Formula, Calculation, Example

To run a successful business, every company should be aware of its Days Sales Outstanding (DSO). This metric measures the average number of days that a company takes to collect its receivables. In other words, it's a key indicator of how quickly a company is being paid by its customers.

It is an important measure that can give insights into a company's collections efficiency, and how well it is managing its working capital. In this article, we will discuss what DSO is, how to calculate it, and what are some examples of DSO.

What is DSO or Days Sales Outstanding

Days Sales Outstanding or DSO is a measure of the average number of days that it takes companies and businesses to collect their receivables. It is an important metric for both creditors and investors, as it can give insights into a company's collections efficiency and working capital management.

A high DSO means that the company is taking a long time to collect its receivables, which could tie up valuable resources that could be used elsewhere. On the other hand, a low DSO indicates that the company is collecting payments quickly, which could be a sign of good financial health.

The formula of DSO

The formula of DSO is pretty straightforward, here is the formula

(Accounts Receivable / Net Credit Sale) X Number of Days = DSO

  1. Accounts Receivables: This is the total amount of money that the company is owned by its customers. It is the sum of all the invoices that have been sent to customers but not yet paid.
  2. Net Credit Sales: Net credit sales are the total amount of revenue that the company has generated from sales to its customers, minus any returns and discounts.
  3. Number of Days: This is simply the number of days between the date of the sale and the due date of the invoice. This means that the number of days will be different for each company, depending on its billing cycle.

Examples of DSO calculation

Let's say that during April, a company called Real Steel has made a total of $600,000 in credit sales and had $450,000 in accounts receivable. There are 30 days in April. So now let's calculate the company's DSO using the formula above.

(Accounts Receivable / Net Credit Sale) X Number of Days = DSO

$450,000 / $600,000 X 30 days = 22.5 days

This means that on average, it takes Real Steel 22.5 days to collect its receivables.

Let's take a look at another example. Let's say, during May, a company called Gotham City has made a total of $1,200,000 in credit sales and had $980,000 in accounts receivable. There are 31 days in May. So now let's calculate Gotham City's DSO using the formula above.

(Accounts Receivable / Net Credit Sale) X Number of Days = DSO

$980,000 / $1,200,000 X 31 days = 25.2 days

This means that on average, it takes Gotham City 25.2 days to collect its receivables.

AS you can see from the two examples above, the DSO can differ from one company to another, depending on the size of the company and the industry it is in.

Conclusion

In this article, we have discussed what Days Sales Outstanding is, how to calculate it, and what are some examples of DSO. DSO or Days Sales Outstanding is an important metric that helps to identify a company's financial health. We hope you found this information helpful. Thank you for reading.

Algorithmic Trading vs. Technical Analysis

There are two main schools of thought when it comes to trading stocks: algorithmic trading and technical analysis. Both have their pros and cons, but which one is right for you? In this blog post, we will discuss the differences between these two methods and help you decide which one is best for your individual trading style.

Algorithmic Trading

Algorithmic trading, also known as "black box" trading, is a method of trading stocks that is based on predefined algorithms or rules. These algorithms are designed to automatically execute trades based on specific criteria, such as price and volume. Algorithmic traders use computers to analyze market data and make buy and sell decisions for them.

Algorithmic trading has become increasingly popular in recent years, as computers have become faster and more sophisticated. This method of trading can be used to trade a wide variety of securities, including stocks, options, futures, and Forex.

Pros: Algorithmic traders have the ability to trade a large number of securities at once, and can do so automatically without emotion or bias. This can result in more consistent profits than manual trading.

Cons: Algorithmic trading can be expensive to set up, and computer glitches can lead to costly losses.

Technical Analysis

Technical analysis is a method of trading stocks that is based on the study of historical price data. Technical analysts use charts and indicators to identify patterns and trends in the data, and then make buy and sell decisions based on these findings.

Technical analysis is the oldest form of trading stocks and is still widely used today. Many professional traders swear by it, claiming that it is more accurate than any other method.

Pros: Technical analysis is a tried and true method that has been proven to work overtime. It is simple to learn and does not require a lot of expensive software or equipment.

Cons: Technical analysis can be slow and methodical, and it may take some time to find profitable trades. Also, technical analysis is not always accurate, and traders can lose money if they rely on it exclusively.

Difference between algorithmic trading and technical analysis

The main difference between algorithmic trading and technical analysis is that algorithmic trading is based on predefined rules or algorithms, while technical analysis is based on the study of historical price data. Algorithmic traders use computers to analyze market data and make buy and sell decisions for them, while technical analysts use charts and indicators to identify patterns and trends in the data.

Algorithmic trading is becoming increasingly popular due to its automated nature and ability to trade a large number of securities at once. Technical analysis is the oldest form of trading stocks and is still widely used today. Many professional traders swear by it, claiming that it is more accurate than any other method.

Similarities between algorithmic trading and technical analysis

Despite being two different methods, algorithmic trading and technical analysis have some similarities. Both are based on the study of historical price data, and both can be used to trade a wide variety of securities. Additionally, both methods can be profitable if used correctly.

The bottom line

Which one is right for you? Algorithmic trading or technical analysis?

Ultimately, the decision of which method to use is up to the individual trader. Algorithmic trading is best for traders who are looking for a more automated approach, while technical analysis is best for traders who want to take a more hands-on approach. Try out both methods and see which one works best for you

Amortized Cost: Definition, Calculation, Examples

When companies acquire financial assets, they must report them on their balance sheet. The value for these items initially comes from the costs associated with obtaining them. Later, however, companies must include them at a different amount. Accounting standards dictate what these amounts should be. Usually, this process falls under the amortized cost method.

What is Amortized Cost?

Amortized cost refers to the value of a financial asset or fixed asset on the balance sheet. It is an accounting method used to determine the value of these items. However, the definition of the amortized cost may vary based on the asset it impacts. Regardless of that, amortized cost represents the amortized value of an item on the balance sheet.

The amortized cost usually equals the acquisition cost of a financial or fixed asset on the balance sheet. However, this value only applies when a company acquires the item initially. Later, companies must also deduct some amounts from that value to reach the amortized cost. It may include principal repayments and discounts or premiums on that item. Similarly, it also accounts for impairment losses and exchange differences.

What is the Amortized Cost of a Fixed Asset?

The amortized cost concept also applies to fixed assets. Usually, it impacts intangible assets, although it can also relate to other resources. The amortized cost of a fixed asset represents the accumulated portion of its cost, expensed out through depreciation or amortization. For natural resources, it also refers to total depletion.

What is the Amortized Cost of Securities?

The amortized cost of securities differs from that of fixed assets. Here, it represents the security's cost adjusted for discounts and premiums associated with the purchase. It considers the difference between the purchase price of that security and its face value. If these values differ, the amortized cost will also vary based on the difference.

A purchase discount occurs when the face value of the security is higher than its purchase price. In this case, the effective interest rate will increase. Therefore, the amortized cost will account for that difference. A purchase premium is when the face value is lower than the purchase price. In this case, the effective interest rate will be lower.

Example

A company, Green Co., purchases a machine for $100,000, which it expects to use for ten years. By the fourth year, the company has charged $40,000 of the asset's cost through depreciation. This portion of the machine's cost represents the amortized cost for that asset. As stated above, it replaces depreciation with depletion of natural resources.

Green Co. also acquires 10,000 bonds with a face value of $100 and a 6% coupon rate. However, the company pays $96 per bond to receive it at a discount. In this case, the effective interest rate is 6.25% [($100 x 6%) / $96]. The company cannot report these bonds at $1,000,000 (10,000 bonds x $100). Instead, Green Co. will include it at its amortized cost of $981,815 in the balance sheet.

Conclusion

Amortized cost refers to the value of fixed or financial assets on the balance sheet. For the former, it represents the charge of holding the asset until that period. For financial assets, it involves the cost of security after accounting for discounts and premiums. The amortized cost concept is crucial in reporting assets in the balance sheet at their actual value.
